Lipoedema is a chronic and progressive condition involving an abnormal build-up of adipose (fat) tissue, typically in the thighs, buttocks, lower legs, and sometimes the arms. It predominantly affects women and can cause disproportionate enlargement, swelling, pain, and tenderness in the affected areas.
This condition is distinct from obesity or lymphoedema and can significantly impact mobility, self-image, and emotional wellbeing.
It may:
• Cause symmetrical enlargement of the legs or arms, sparing the hands and feet
• Result in pain, tenderness, or easy bruising of the affected tissue
• Create a feeling of heaviness or tension in the limbs
• Lead to difficulty losing fat in the affected areas despite exercise or diet
• Be associated with hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause
• Affect mobility, joint health, and confidence in daily life
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on clinical assessment, including a detailed medical history and physical examination by a qualified health professional.
Lipoedema is often underdiagnosed or mistaken for obesity, lymphoedema, or venous disease, making awareness and accurate recognition essential.
Key diagnostic features include:
• Symmetrical fat distribution on the legs, buttocks, and/or arms
• Sparing of the hands and feet (the “cuff sign”)
• Pain, tenderness, or easy bruising
• Minimal pitting oedema compared to lymphoedema
• Family history or onset during hormonal transitions
