lymphoedema treatment
Lymphoedema occurs when the body’s lymphatic system the network that helps circulate fluid and support immunity becomes unable to drain fluid effectively. This leads to a gradual build-up of protein-rich fluid within the tissues, causing swelling, heaviness, and discomfort.
It may:
• Affect one or both limbs, or areas such as the trunk, head, neck, or genitals
• Cause visible swelling, tightness, or a heavy feeling in the affected area
• Make clothing, shoes, or jewellery feel tighter than usual
• Lead to changes in skin texture, including thickening or hardness if untreated
• Impact mobility, comfort, and confidence in daily activities
Types of lymphoedema:
• Primary lymphoedema – caused by a congenital difference or underdevelopment of the lymphatic system
• Secondary lymphoedema – develops as a result of damage or obstruction to the lymphatic system due to surgery, radiation, infection, trauma, or other medical conditions
Diagnosis is based on clinical assessment, including medical history, observation of swelling patterns, and physical examination by a qualified health professional.
Early signs to look for:
• A feeling of tightness, puffiness, or fullness in the skin
• Swelling that reduces overnight but returns during the day
• Aching, heaviness, or reduced flexibility in nearby joints
